A bit delayed but here it is.

I sat the DCD a while at VMworld San Fran. Having never taken an exam at VMworld, this was an entirely new experience for me.

Well, the PearsonVue exam experience, was pretty much like any other, I just didn’t realize how much it would affect my VMworld experience. With my exam Tuesday midmorning, pretty much any free time I had before then I tried to study. So Saturday evening after arriving, Sunday most of the day, Monday most of day (skipping sessions), and Monday later evening were spent studying.

Considering I was scheduled to leave Thursday morning, this significantly altered how much I could experience and enjoy VMworld. Sure there are some that would say that it kept me from partying as much, which is true. However, a vast majority of the great tech/virtualization conversations that happen at VMworld occur during these “parties”. The flowing booze helps us otherwise non-social tech people open up and make new friends and learn a lot from one another.

Anyway, as I digress…I didn’t enjoy VMworld as much because I was studying, and probably won’t schedule a test there again.

Back to the exam, it was pretty much what you would expect. Visio like design questions, and drag & drop style matching questions. The only thing that surprised me was that the exam was 22 questions. Unless I was looking at the wrong blueprint, the latest one I could find (Dec 2014) says 46 questions.Edit: Found the newest that said 22 🙂

The questions themselves were fair, as with most VMware exams, and everything in the blueprint is fair game. Questions also seemed to have more parts to them than I expected, so maybe that is why the number of questions is down to 22 from 46.

As usual, I also got that one question that happens every exam that makes me think…”Sure this is on the blueprint, but No One Cares About This”. Well, my thought process may have had a bit more expletives than that, but you get the idea.

I finished up with about 30 minutes left on the clock and was able to pull out a PASS. Which I was very excited about. Afterwards I got Matt Brender to get a pick of me happy, which he seemed a bit confused about.

So how did I study?

My study consisted mostly of

vSphere Design Course from Pluralsight
vBrownbag APAC DCD courses (a bit dated but still super relevant)
VCAP DCD Practice Site

All of which were SUPER helpful in getting me prepped and feeling out how the exam would be.

Hope this helps anyone studying!
